Gynecomastia is a condition in males that results in enlarged breasts due to hormonal imbalance. It occurs in more than 50% of men. Male breast reduction surgery is an approved and the best effective treatment to get rid of overdeveloped breasts. It is a plastic surgery that involves liposuction and removal of glandular tissue to eliminate excess fat and restore the masculine chest.
Why do males go for Breast Reduction Surgery?
- Males may experience enhanced breasts due to various reasons.
- It may be due to hormones imbalance like estrogen and testosterone that develops an enhanced mammary gland.
- Excessive drug intake and medication may also contribute to larger breasts.
- It may occur due to genetics, weight gain and may be due to particular age. Hormones are intense during adolescence and puberty, due to which some young males experience an increase in breast size, which may be temporary.
- Enlarged mammary tissues may also be due to certain diseases like kidney failure or liver dysfunction.
Procedure
Gynaecomastia is treated with plastic surgery that involves liposuction or tissue excision.
Liposuction
In liposuction, the plastic surgeon fills the tissue with fluid. The surgeon inserts the cannula through a small cut and moves it back and forth to loosen the fat. Ultimately, it extracts this fat by suction. Finally, the surgeon would sculpt the new chest contour similar to the natural breasts.
Tissue excision for breast reduction
Surgical removal is for severe cases of gynecomastia. Surgical tissue removal is the only option if the candidate has reduced areola or needs the nipple reposition. Tissue excision removes a more significant amount of glandular tissue than liposuction. The procedure involves various cutting patterns that depend on the particular conditions of the patients.
Recovery after Plastic Surgery
After a breast reduction surgery patient may experience sore, swollen, and reddish breasts for few weeks that the medications prescribed by the surgeon can handle. The patient needs to wear elasticated compression garments until the stitches dissolve. Precautions must be observed until fully returning to the normal routine activities. Stretching, exercising, and heavy lifting should be avoided. It takes about six months to recover and restore the ideal chest fully. Scar marks would diminish over a few months.
